Sunshine boss, Mike Idoko |
The management of Sunshine Stars has paid up the
outstanding wages of its players, we can authoritatively report.
Executive Director of the Ondo State Football
Agency (OSFA), Mike Idoko confirmed this much on Tuesday. According to him, the
management resolved the issue of unpaid dues to avoid threatening the team’s
preparation for the ultimate CAF Champions League clash against Al Ahly of
Egypt.
“As at when I left the office yesterday ‘Monday’,
the players’ checks were being issued to them. The checks are not bogus ones,
so they will get their money,” Idoko said.
It would be recalled that players of the club had
been grumbling over non-payment of their dues and there were fears that the
players may boycott training. But this has now been resolved according to
Idoko. However, attempts to get a player to confirm the story proved abortive
as he cut the call on our corrspondent.
Idoko confirmed that the team has already begun
training for the encounter in Akure. He said that contrary to major beliefs,
the team was actually not under as much pressure as the Egyptians who are
expected to produce a sterling report.
He went down memory lane to explain that he (Idoko)
has led a team that stunned the Egyptian side in the past even after losing the
away leg in Cairo. This, he believed would work to the team’s advantage.
“The coach that is in charge of the team now was the
assistant coach then. So, he knows clearly what could happen. So, the pressure
is on the Egyptians,” Idoko said.
Meanwhile, coach of the side, Gbenga Ogunbote has
admitted his team could be match-rusty in the CAF Champions League semi-final because
the NPL season is over. But he hopes to work out as much kinks out of them as
possible in training.
