Three Eaglets fail MRI test in Morocco

Eaglets players preparing for training
Three players in the national U17 squad Golden Eaglets have failed the mandatory MRI scan tests at the ongoing CAN U17 Cup in Morocco.
The trio of Onyinye Ndidi, Ibrahim Abdullahi and Emmanuel Asadu and six other players: three from Congo and the same number from Cote d’Ivoire failed the test in results made public on Saturday.
The Eaglets which is in Marrakech will now go through the championship with just 18 players at its disposal, the same as Congo and Cote d’Ivoire.
Meanwhile other members of the team have been talking tough ahead of today’s battle with Ghana’s Black Starlets.
Ahmed Umar says the team is ready for a tough time at the tourney.
“I’m happy to be part of this team and I pray that God crown our efforts. We know at the back of our minds that it is not going to be an easy championship particularly with everybody tipping us as the favourites. But we are not getting carried away.”
Kelechi Iheanacho is also sure the team can shine.
“We are going to play for ourselves as a team. Football is a team game and we believe collective efforts will help us. We don’t see ourselves as favourites because we have not won anything. Our style is different and anybody in this team is capable of scoring goals.”
Jide Idowu assures that the team is in the right frame of mind to produce good results.
”We are not been over confident but we know what we are capable of doing. We just pray that God help us achieve our objective here. We have worked hard and we know it is only God that will crown all the efforts with resounding success.”
Ifeanyi Matthew says: “It will be difficult for me to pick one player that is the star of this team. We all see ourselves as stars and we respect each other because each player brings a particular thing to the team.
“So many good players in this team and we have to thank the coaching crew for helping us attain this level.”
On his part, Bernard Bulbwa promises five-star performance.
“Against Ghana on Saturday, it is going to be maximum concentration from me. It is the first game of the championship for us and we have told ourselves that we must put more than 100 percent to achieve victory. We respect Ghana like any other team; we are not going to underrate them.”

CAF confirms Heartland's Confederation Cup exit

.To sanction club

Confederation of African Football (CAF) has finally confirmed the exit of Heartland FC of Owerri from the ongoing Confederation Cup.
The continental football body ruled expectedly in a press statement on Saturday that the Nazi Millionaires as Heartland is called was at fault after it failed to show up on time for the second-leg tie between it and US Bitam of Gabon on Saturday, April 6 in Bitam.
Travel hitches due to lack of funds kept Heartland’s contingent grounded in the country until just few hours before the match. It eventually arrived in Gabon, only to learn that it had been walked over by the hosts.
But CAF has ruled that the team’s failure to meet up with the kickoff time was a failing on its part and not as a result of Force Majeure or something beyond its control. This, it noted was contrary to Article 16 of the body’s competition regulations and effectively, dumps the team out of the championship.
The football body also noted that Heartland will face further sanctions for its poor planning and breaking of the competition rules.
CAF ruled thus: “In relation to the match initially scheduled on Saturday April 06th which did not take place between US Bitam (Gabon) and Heartland (Nigeria) in the frame of the 10th edition of the Orange Confederation Cup 2013, the referees and officials registered the absence of Heartland team at the time of kick off.
“The CAF Inter-clubs Committee considered that the absence of the team from Nigeria was mainly the responsibility of the club Heartland, rather than a case of force majeure.
“Consequently, and in conformity with article 16 of the competition regulations:
“‘If for any reason whatsoever, a team withdraws from the competition or does not report for a match-except in case of force majeure accepted by the Organising Committee- or if it refuses to play or leaves the ground before the regular end of the match without the permission of the referee, it shall be considered loser and shall be eliminated from the competition. The same shall apply to the teams which were declared disqualified by decision of CAF.’
“And without considering other possible sanctions to be applied during the next meeting of the CAF inter-clubs Committee in May in Cairo, the CAF Inter-cubs Committee considers the team Heartland eliminated from the competition.”

Emenike, Moses left out of Thursday training

Super Eagles coaching crew on Thursday left out the striking pair of Spartak Moscow's Emmanuel Emenike and Chelsea's Victor Moses from the team's training session ahead of the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations final.
Although officials confirmed that Emenike’s injury was not serious, while a scan would be carried out for Moses, Coach Stephen Keshi-led technical crew decide to let the duo sit out the training. But Emenike is expected back in training on Friday.
Emenike injured his right leg during the semi-final victory over Mali while shooting for goal, but team spokesman Ben Alaiya said it was not a serious injury as the doctor is expected to confirm this later Thursday.
"Emenike's injury is not serious, he had just a knock which is minor. He should be fit for final, but we are waiting for the medical report on him which should be ready by lunch time,"Alaiya said.
Emenike has scored four goals so far in the tournament with two assists to top the goals chart at the AFCON in South Africa.
He suffered what looked like a hamstring injury while shooting from long range at goal against Mali on Wednesday. Eagles coach Stephen Keshi disclosed that a scan will be carried out on Chelsea winger Moses, who also picked up an injury against Mali.
“We hope it is not serious and he will play the final,” said Keshi. A team official hinted to our source that the two players will be in good shape to tackle Stallions of Burkina Faso on Sunday.

Nigerian fans to hold prayers for Eagles

Nigerian football fans in South Africa will hold a prayer session for the Super Eagles of Nigeria ahead of its match against the Stallions of Burkina in the final of the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations, we have gathered.
The prayer session is initiated by ex-Nigeria international footballer now turned pastor, Peterside Idah who will lead the session at his church in Johannesburg Area, South Africa called Christ Ambassadors Church on Sunday morning.
According to Idah, all Nigerian fans in South Africa are invited for the spiritual moment aimed at pushing the Super Eagles onto a much deserved victory at the Soccercity Stadium in South Africa on Sunday.
Meanwhile, the Super Eagles on Thursday morning departed Durban, where it slaughtered the Eagles of Mali 4-1 on Wednesday at the Moses Mabhida Stadium, for Johannesburg where it would face the Stallions in the final.
The Eagles is considered home team at the Soccercity by Confederation of African Football (CAF) and therefore, will wear the traditional all-green jersey that is considered to bring the Eagles luck.
Unconfirmed reports have however claimed that the team is not happy with the members of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) for not believing in it.
According to a source close to the camp, the coaching crew and the players feel that the NFF never had faith in the team in spite of all the efforts of the players and the coaches to prove themselves.
What particularly annoyed them, we gathered was the discovery that most of the NFF board members had booked early flights home because they did not expect the team to make it as far as the final of the competition.
It is however doubtful if this would affect the players on Sunday because many of them have sincerely signified their readiness to give all it takes to bring the trophy back to Nigeria and to give a good show to President Goodluck Jonathan that has confirmed his availability for the match.

The two were joined by Osun State Governor Rauf Aregbesola who was ful of thanks and prayers for the team.Aregbesola was also quick to advice the team that the target is the coveted trophy.
"Adupe, Alhamdulillahi....NOW GO FOR THE CUP IN THE FINAL. UP SUPER EAGLES... FLY... AND SOAR HOME WITH THE CUP," Aregbesola posted.
Other eminent Nigerians that congratulated the team included estranged striker, Levante's Obafemi Martins whose absence from the team has continued to generate arguments across the country.
"Congratulations to the Super Eagles and Nigerians..." an elated Martins posted.
Also congratulating the team was top Musician, Banky Wellington, who was also full of delight at the team's display.
"MALI, spelt. Super Eagles, soaring. AFCON Finals up next. Leggo Naijaaaaaaaaaaa," he wrote on his twitter account.
The Super Eagles downed the Malian Eagles 4-1 on the road to the final.

Gullit tips Super Eagles to lift trophy

Dutch football great, Ruud Gullit has tipped the Super Eagles to lift the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations trophy in South Africa.
Speaking in a post-match analysis, Gullit, who praised the Super Eagles for its victory over Mali, noted that the team has what it takes to lift the trophy.
Gullit said the team's confidence has reached a level that it is beginning to believe in itself so much that it would be hard to stop.
The former Dutch international footballer was particularly dazzled by Chelsea's John Mikel Obi's performance, which he noted was part of the reason the team did so well. Gullit was also impressed with the team's runs that often got it behind the Malian defense without much problems.
Meanwhile, Super Eagles coach Stephen Keshi has praised the team spirit of his players which saw the Super Eagles defeat Eagles of Mali.
Speaking during a post-match conference, Keshi noted that the players' discipline, tactics and the conditions in camp were responsible for the victory.
"There was discipline in camp, the players were determined and so everything just fell into place. We thank God that we are in the final."
Asked what he thought would be outcome of the final on Sunday, Keshi smiled and replied that the team is still basking in the glory of getting to the finals but it would work hard and accept whatever result that comes to the team in the final on Sunday.
"We are happy to be in the finals. Whenwe play that match we will take whatever comes our way," Keshi said. The former Super Eagles captain was full of joy after his much-criticised team made it to the final in style through the 4-1 drubbing.

Super Eagles sails into Nations Cup final

Wallops Mali 4-1

Super Eagles of Nigeria on Wednesday booked a place in the final of the ongoing Africa Cup of Nations after it thrashed its Malian counterparts 4-1 in the first semifinal match at the Moses Mabhida Stadium in Durban.
Eagles opened scoring in the 25th minute through defender Elderson Uwa Echiejile who headed in a low ball from a Victor Moses cross after the Chelsea forward wormed his way past Adama Tamboura. The Nigerian side increased the tally in the 30th minute after Moses set up striker Emmanuel Emenike that in turn squared the ball across for Brown Ideye who managed to direct a shot past Malian goalkeeper Mamadou Samassa.
Emenike got the opportunity to put his name on the scorers' sheet and does so in style in the 44th minute through a free kick from just 25 yards out. Emenike's shot took a huge deflection off Mohamed Sissoko in the Mali wall, sending Samassa the wrong way.
Ahmed Musa completed the rout for the Eagles with a fourth goal in the 60th minute. Musa, who was brought by Keshi in the 53rd minute, latched onto a pass, broke the offside trap to get in behind Mali defense and went in one-on-one with goalkeeper Samassa and scored by placing the ball through the legs of the goalkeeper to connect the bottom left corner of the goal.
But in the 75th minute, Cheikh Diarra got a consolatory goal for the Malians after Cheikh Diabate was let through by the Nigerian defence and he picked out Diarra who placed his shot into the bottom right hand corner of the goal.
The scoreline in this triumph equals Nigeria's biggest win in the history of the African Cup of Nations, which was the 4-0 win over South Africa in 2004.
Coach of the team, Stephen Keshi could not hold back his joy while speaking at a post-match conference. Keshi noted that the players' discipline, tactics and the conditions in camp were responsible for the victory.
"There was discipline in camp, the players were determined and so everything just fell into place. We thank God that we are in the final."

Keshi, Oliseh praise Super Eagles

Super Eagles coach Stephen Keshi has praised his team after it defeated Cote d’Ivoire 2-1 in the quarter-final of the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations in South Africa on Sunday.
An elated Keshi was full of praises for the team and all those that believed in the team despite the odds. The former Mali tactician expressed his gladness at the team’s discipline and gradual development.
“It was a wonderful victory. I want to thank my players and the media that believed in the team that we can. I hope that we can make it to the final.
“I’m glad that my team is progressing with every game. There is great discipline in the team. Nobody gave us the chance to do anything but God is good,” Keshi told a cross section of journalists in a post-match conference after the game.
On his part, former Super Eagles captain, Sunday Oliseh has also praised the team for its performance. He noted in a post-match analysis that the team made him proud to be a Nigerian.
He however admonished all those that never believed in the team to say thank you to it because the team played with determination and got the result.
He also urged better support for the team in future matches.
“I am proud of this team. The boys played with determination. For the first time in a long time I saw a Nigerian team that went with their chests out.
“Everybody should apologize and say thank you to the team because they went out there and proved them wrong. People might not like Keshi, but it was neither he nor Amokachi that played out there today. So, whoever is in charge, people should support them.
“In the first ten minutes, the Cote d’Ivoire players came to the party because they thought that it would be easy but as time went on, they saw things were different,” Oliseh said.

Sunday Mba fires Eagles into semis

Super Eagles against all odds qualified for the semi-final of the ongoing Africa Cup of Nations in South Africa with attacking midfielder, Sunday Mba scoring the winner with 12 minutes left on the clock.
The match was 1-1 when Mba took a solo run from the edge of the centre circle before unleashing a right footer at the edge of Cote d' Ivoire box that was deflected into the net. Eagles had taken the lead after several misses on 43rd minute when Emmanuel Emenike shot sailed into the net. It was a free kick awarded Eagles and Victor Moses simply tipped the ball to Emenike who fired a canon of a shot that sailed into the net.
Five minutes after resumption, Cheik Tiote, cancelled the first half lead when he nodded home a free kick perfectly taken by Didier Drogba. Five Ivoriens were left unmarked at the edge of the six yards box and when the ball was floated to that area there was no Nigerian to contest the ball with Tiote. It was a higher standard of match than others at these finals, with Cote d' Ivoire restoring its full starting XI after playing a shadow side against Algeria last group match.
The Super Eagles, meanwhile, made two changes from the 2-0 win over Ethiopia, with Ogenyi Onazi replacing the suspended Fegor Ogude and Ideye Brown in for Ike Uche. The Elephants were comfortable favourites according to the bookmakers, but it did not show in the first half as Nigeria bossed the game.
John Obi Mikel dictated the tempo, but Victor Moses was the main man, threatening with his livewire runs and pinpoint set-piece deliveries, also forcing a smart stop from Boubacar Barry with a long-range effort. Brown also headed just over from a Moses free-kick, while Emenike was guilty of a poor miss when he hit over after Brown played him through.
Cote d' Ivoire meanwhile, was struggling to register a passing move, failing to get Yaya Toure on the ball and only threatening from set pieces - even then, Vincent Enyeama barely had to make a save. So it was not altogether unsurprising when Nigeria took the lead a few minutes before the break, although Barry would have been disappointed that he failed to stop Emenike’s long-range drive after a quickly-taken free-kick from Moses.
The Ivorien keeper was not helped by his wall, which inexcusably broke in fear when the Spartak Moscow forward unleashed his thunderbolt, but it was straight at him and - while very quick - the movement was not so great as to justify the ball flying through his arms. It was a good time to score, with Nigeria deservedly going into half-time ahead of their sluggish opponents.
The Elephants started the second half at a much higher tempo, although Salomon Kalou was perhaps a touch too enthusiastic as he was booked for going down easily in the penalty area. Drogba appeared to get away with a similar overreaction a few minutes later, and it was his free-kick that found the head of Tiote, one of five Cote d' Ivoire players unmarked at the far end of the six-yard box.
Tiote buried his header, with Nigeria’s players bunched around the near post, marking neither men nor zones. It was a terrible collective piece of defending, and reflective of a wider malaise the Super Eagles appeared to be suffering in the second half. Eagles did click back into gear after the hour mark, Brown going close with a header from a Moses corner but Barry doing well this time to hold on to the loose ball.
His opposite number also came to the rescue with a fine save from a ferocious Toure drive as the match opened up, with Cote d' Ivoire introducing the direct Max Gradel for the hitherto ineffectual Kalou. But it was Nigeria who got the breakthrough, and it was fortuitous at best. Locally-based midfielder Mba, who was a surprise pick for the match after failing to impress against Ethiopia, had been quiet until – with 12 minutes remaining – he showed a neat turn of pace to create some space on the edge of the box.
His shot would probably have been saved by Barry, but it took a wicked deflection off the onrushing Sol Bamba, flying off his back, over the keeper and in. Suddenly the onus was on the Ivoriens to take the game to Nigeria, which they did by bringing on 6’8” striker Lacina Traore. He almost had an impact, denied a close-range finish by a last-gasp block from Mikel, but otherwise Cote d' Ivoire struggled to break down Nigeria, who was playing five at the back in the latter stages.
There was a brief threat in injury time as a cluster of set pieces saw the Ivoriens throw everything forward, but in truth Nigeria was comfortable as it closed out a famous win and a place in the last four.
Super Eagles will now play Mali in the semis on Wednesday. Mali defeated host South Africa 3-1 on penalties after their game ended 1-1.

Keshi declares Yobo fit, as Efe returns

Super Eagles coach, Stephen Keshi has slammed reports that team captain Joseph Yobo is not fit enough to play for the team at the Nations Cup.
Speaking at the team’s press conference in Rustenburg on Monday, the former Eagles captain expressed his disappointment at the reports making the round that Yobo was unfit and too old to play in the team that is eyeing a third African title.
He noted that such reports were shabby treatments of African players that were trying hard to impress compared to treatments of European stars.
“I don’t get it. There are players in Europe such as Javier Zanetti that are 37 years and older and when they play, people applaud them. But when an African player is 35 years and he has just one bad game, people will say he is too old and unfit. I just don’t get it.
“He (Yobo) is fit. If he was not, he would not be here. So, I don’t care what anybody says,” a very angry Keshi said.
There have been conflicting reports about Yobo’s fitness with some reports claiming that he was not yet fully fit to return to action for the Eagles.
Yobo sat out the match against Zambia in Mbombela after putting up a poor performance in the team’s opening game against Burkina Faso on January 21.
On his part, Super Eagles and Celtic of Scotland defender Efe Ambrose that was red-carded in the team's opening match against the Stallions of Burkina Faso at the Mbombela Stadium in Nelspruit will return to the team's ranks for the final group match against the Walyas Antelopes of Ethiopia.
This was confirmed by Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) Assistant Director on Media, Ademola Olajire in a brief interview.
According to Olajire, although Ambrose is now available to the team, whether he would be featured in the squad in the cracker against Ethiopia on Tuesday is entirely dependent on Coach Keshi.
"Efe Ambrose is returning to the team but whether he would play on Tuesday depends entirely on the coach," he said. Ambrose was handed a match ban by CAF after he saw red following two yellow-card offenses.
Meanwhile, the NFF has denied being involved in the punishment handed out to Egyptian referee, Ghead Grisha who was centre referee in the controversial draw between the Eagles and the Chipolopolos on Friday.
Olajire said that although the NFF did petition Confederation of African Football (CAF), the decision was arrived at without any pressure from the Federation.
"No, we did not pressure CAF for the decision. It was a unilateral decision by the African body which did not want the name of the game brought into disrepute," he said.
Grisha was sacked from officiating at the 2013 Nations Cup after a controversial penalty call handed Zambia a draw against Nigeria in their second group game.

Be focused, NFF tells Keshi

Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has told Coach Keshi and his technical crew to remain focused after the draw with Burkina Faso on Monday.
The NFF gave this directive on Tuesday during an urgent meeting between the national football body and the Super Eagles' technical crew just as the team begins preparations for the clash with defending champions Chipolopolo of Zambia. The meeting that was held at the team's hotel, we gathered was to look at what went wrong against Burkina Faso and to offer the team the necessary motivation to move ahead.
NFF President Aminu Maigari after the meeting denied that the Federation was piling pressure on the team's coaching crew. According to him, all the Federation wanted was a better result than the one seen in the team's first match on Monday.
"No pressure on the team. We just want a credible performance," he said.
Meanwhile, there are indications that Super Eagles and Chelsea forward Victor Moses will again miss the match against Zambia on Friday. According to sources close to the camp, Moses is not yet fit. He is however being penciled down for a return in the third match.
Moses, who saw the draw on Monday as having a positive side, cleared the air on why he was absent in a twitter message on Tuesday.
"Tough first game 1-1. Plenty of positives for us. Reason for those asking why I didn't play was (I) picked up minor injury in training. (I will be) back soon," he said.
Meanwhile, the team's camp got an unexpected visitor on Tuesday in pint-sized Nollywood actor, Osita Iheme (popularly known as Paw Paw). The actor said his visit was to cheer up the players and motivate them. He wished the team luck against Zambia.
"Bumped into Pawpaw in hotel today, Nigerian actor and legend came to wish us luck! Great to meet you," Moses posted on twitter on Tuesday afternoon.

Eagles thrashes Farense 5-0 in Faro

Super Eagles
Super Eagles on Tuesday thrashed Portugese third division side SC Farense 5-0 in its final warm-up match played in Faro, Portugal.
The Eagles opened scoring in the fifth minute through a penalty kick by Chelsea's John Obi Mikel. Ike Uche, who was brought in by Coach Keshi in the second half grabbed a hattrick to make the scores 4-0 before Spartak Moscow striker Emmanuel Emenike put in the fifth goal.
The victory over Farense was the first decisive win that the team recorded in its four warm-up friendly matches.
The Eagles had earlier drawn 1-1 with a selected side from Catalonia on January 2 in Spain, then 0-0 with Blue Sharks of Cape Verde on January 9 at the Estadio Algarve before recording its first victory in a 1-0 triumph over Netherlands side Sparta Rotterdam on January 12.
Sunshine Stars defender Godfrey Oboabona was the only home-based player that made the Eagles starting eleven in the match that had been earlier slated for 1pm Nigerian time but was postponed for logistsics reasons till 3.30pm yet did not start until several minutes later.
The team is billed to depart Faro for South Africa on Thursday evening.
Meanwhile, unconfirmed reports have claimed that Eagles coach Keshi has drawn the ire of sportswear company Adidas which is angry after spotting him wearing a Nike tracksuit during training. This is not the first time that Keshi has been chastised for wearing brands he should not.

NPL management confirms February 16 kickoff date

.Draws hold February 2

Chairman of the Interim Management of the Nigeria Premier League (NPL), Nduka Irabor has confirmed that the league kickoff date of February 16 remains unchanged.
Speaking in a brief interview monitored on Tuesday, Irabor said that the management was seriously focused on the earlier scheduled date and had no intention of having it changed.
He also revealed that the league draws that had been postponed from its initial date of January 16 and 17 would now hold at least two weeks before that date. This implies that the draws would hold around February 2.
In the same vein, Irabor expressed his delight at the inclusion of six home based players in Coach Stephen Keshi's Nations Cup squad. He noted that the league had more talented players like them that could make the team as well.
Irabor further expressed confidence in the league getting better this term. He said the league would try its best to pick up from where it left off and do better in the new season.
But a source very close to the league has said that nothing good will come out of the league this year in spite of the many efforts being made.
The source noted that contrary to widely held opinions, the league was far from being all right and argued that only 'God can save the league' as many issues remain unattended to.

NFF monitors Cote d' Ivoire, Ghana for Eagles

NFF President, Maigari
Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has been monitoring 2012 Nations Cup runners-up Cote d'Ivoire and semifinalists Ghana, we have gathered.
Super Eagles team spokesperson, Ben Alaiya revealed this much on Tuesday in his daily update of activities in the team's camp in Faro, Portugal.
Alaiya said although the NFF was also monitoring all the other 15 teams participating in the championship, including debutants Cape Verde, much attention is being paid to these two teams that the Eagles could end up meeting before the final of the championship.
He noted that emphasis on these two teams does not mean that others like defending champions, Zambia are not important.
Meanwhile, Chapadungu Lungu, Sports Editor of popular Zambian daily, Daily Mail has said that ignoring Zambia would be at Nigeria's own peril.
Lungu noted in a live interview with a Nigerian radio monitored on Tuesday that the current Zambian team was indeed stronger than the last one contrary to what most people think.
He said that he and other Zambians were pretty sure that the team would defeat the Super Eagles when the two sides meet at the Nations Cup, notwithstanding that past records favour the Eagles.
"The national team (Chipolopolo is stronger than the one of last year. Zambians believe that we can get this one over Nigeria. We outplayed Nigeria in 2010, but we could not win. But Zambian fan, analysts and stakeholders believe that this time we can get past Nigeria," a confident Lungu said.

Super Eagles of Nigeria will on Tuesday play its final Nations Cup warm-up friendly match against SC Farense, a third division side in Portugal.
The match will be played at Estadio Algarve, home ground of the Portuguese team and the venue of the warm up friendly match between Eagles and Nations Cup-bound, Blue Sharks of Cape Verde.

Meanwhile, Eagles' media officer, Ben Alaiya has disclosed that Kano Pillars' Gabriel Reuben that had been sick with chicken pox is back to full fitness. He revealed that Reuben was 100 percent fit.
Alaiya's revelation was backed by a source close to the team, who revealed that Gabriel played in the match against Rotterdam because he was fit.
"I can tell you that Reuben is quite all right," the source said.

Spain, Uruguay to clash in Doha

Current European and world football champions, Spain, and the current South American champions, Uruguay, in an international friendly match at Khalifa International Stadium in Doha, Qatar on 6 February 2013 at 9pm (Qatari time).
Qatar Football Association (QFA) announced this on Friday in a release made available to media houses across the globe.
Sheikh Hamad Bin Khalifa Bin Ahmad Al Thani, President of the Qatar Football Association, said: “We are extremely eager to host the champions of Europe and South America for what promises to be an intriguing battle.
“2013 is already shaping up to be another important year for football for fans here in Doha with the successful resumption of January’s training camps at Aspire – this year with Paris Saint-Germain, FC Bayern Munich and FC Schalke 04 – and now an enthralling spectacle between Spain and Uruguay to look forward to.”
The Battle of the Champions will be a dramatic prelude to the teams’ match-up in Group B of the FIFA Confederations Cup Brazil 2013 in June. Spain finished 2012 ranked as the best team in the world, winning the UEFA Euro 2012 and having previously won the 2010 FIFA World Cup South Africa, where Uruguay finished fourth.
Uruguay, known as La Celeste, ended the year ranked sixteenth in the FIFA/Coca-Cola World Ranking. The last time the two teams faced each other was in 2005, when Jorge Fossati, the former Al Sadd manager, was coaching Uruguay. Spain won 2-0 at the Estadio El Molinón in Gijón, Spain.
In the past few years, Qatar has successfully hosted several high-profile international friendly matches, including Brazil vs. England in 2009, Argentina vs. Brazil in 2010 and Egypt vs. Brazil in 2011.

Eagles defeats Sparta Rotterdam 1-0

Super Eagles of Nigeria on Saturday defeated Netherland side Sparta Rotterdam 1-0 in an international friendly played at the Nigerian team's camp in Faro, Portugal.
Spartak Moscow striker Emmanuel Emenike got the only goal of the match in the second half to give the Nigerian side its first victory in three warm-up matches ahead of the 29th edition of the Africa Nations Cup.
In the same vein, defending champions and group-mates of the Eagles, Chipolopolo of Zambia recorded yet another goalless encounter against Norway in a warm-up match played on Saturday in Ndola.
This brings the total number of warm-up matches played by the Zambians to five, all without a victory. Just last week alone, the Zambians recorded two goalless draws, the first against Morocco on Tuesday and then Norway on Saturday.
The development has been giving Zambian fans sleepless nights although Coach Herve Rennard has assured that everything is fine.
"A lot of pundits do not believe we can win the title again and do not want to take risks with their predictions. It is easier to say Zambia will never win the Cup of Nations again," Renard said. "If we fail to retain the trophy, it simply means another team was better than us. However, it will be very difficult to beat this Zambian team."
Meanwhile, another Group C opponents of the Eagles, Walyas Antelopes of Ethiopia defeated fellow central African team, Tanzania 2-1 on Friday in its last warm-up match. The Antelopes played three friendly international matches and won 2 and drew 1.

Keshi ignores Osaze’s twitter rants

Osaze Odemwingie
Super Eagles coach Stephen Keshi has decided to ignore the comments being made by an angry Osaze Odemwingie after he was left out of the Nations Cup provisional list released by the coach on Friday.
Keshi said he had no intentions of bandying words with the West Bromwich Albion of England forward who has taken to twitter to vent his anger on being dropped.
Media officer of the team, Ben Alaiya quoted Keshi as saying that he is unconcerned that Osaze has chosen a social media as the avenue to register his complaints, neither is he concerned about replying to his words. Keshi said he had more pressing matters in building a winning team for Nations Cup in January.
“I’m not interested in Peter, he’s not in my team, I don’t have a twitter account, so it’doesn’t bother me. Yeah, I will speak to him down the line, if he wants to speak to me. That will not be a problem,” Keshi was quoted by a source as saying.
Meanwhile, we have gathered that players dropped on Friday by Coach Keshi in his 32-man list have not left the team’s camp.
As at Monday morning, these players were in camp and even trained with the former Mali and Togo coach. Although their reasons for staying on could not be confirmed as at press time, we gathered that they might have been allowed to stay on by the coach until the team leaves for its Faro, Portugal camp after the Christmas celebrations of this week.

Newcastle United striker Shola Ameobi has been dropped from Stephen Keshi's national squad to the Africa Cup of Nations in January.
Ameobi, we gathered was withdrawn from Nigeria's African Cup of Nations squad after 'private talks' was held between the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) and Newcastle United boss Alan Pardew.
Ameobi that made his first appearance for Nigeria in the 3-1 defeat of La Vinotinto of Venezuela on November 14 in Miami, Florida received a call up from Coach Keshi on Friday. But he will not be playing for Nigeria as Newcastle has begged for him to be left out of the squad.
Attempts to get the NFF's position on Monday proved abortive as calls to the Federation's spokesperson Ademola Olajiire and other officials did not go through.
Meanwhile, we gathered that Danny Shittu of second-tier English football side Millwall FC might also not be joining the team's camp in Faro, Portugal as his coach Kenny Jackett 'expects him to reject' the offer to return to the Super Eagles.
