President of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF),
Alhaji Aminu Maigari was one of the Confederation of African Football (CAF)
executives that voted in favour of a controversial amendment to the continental
football body’s statutes that will see Issa Hayatou remain as leader of the organization
even after 25 years in charge already, we can authoritatively report.
Our correspondent gathered that out of the 51 African
football association chiefs that gathered at Seychelles for the CAF Congress
over the weekend, 44 countries voted in favour of the amendment that bars
anyone outside the Executive Committee from entering the race for the position
of the president of the organisation.
Only six countries voted against the move that was
proposed by CAF president Issa Hayatou. These were Mali, Niger, Senegal, Burundi,
Liberia and Ivory Coast. The acceptance and adaptation of this proposal automatically
put a stop to the presidential ambitions of Jacques Anouma who aimed to dethrone
the long-serving CAF president next year.
The new amendment states that whoever is seeking
the presidency must be a voting member of the Executive Committee.
Initially, Hayatou, had been rumoured to be ready step
down due to poor health when his term runs out next year, but he suddenly announced
his intention to stand for four more years.
Hayatou’s critics have suggested that the amendment
was intentionally proposed to bar Anouma from running for the presidency of the
African football body.
