Heineken Nigeria Cup tees off next weekend

Activities marking the 16th edition of the Heineken-sponsored Nigeria Cup, has been scheduled to tee off at the Golf Section of the Ikoyi Club from September 22 with the Children’s Clinic, Chairman of the Organising Committee of the event, Tayo Babalakin has disclosed.
Speaking at the events pre-tournament briefing in Ikoyi on Wednesday, Babalakin, while thanking the brewers of the Premium Beer; Heineken for their support over the years, explained that the Children’s Clinic would be followed closely by the Caddies Competition on Monday, September 24.
Lady golfers are expected to take their turn on the course on Tuesday, September 25 while a special Nigeria Cup Independence Kitty will commence another phase of the competition on Wednesday, September 26.
Backed by the Heineken, 60-invited tour professionals led by Lateef Lasisi, from Ikeja Golf Club, are expected to storm the broad fairways of Ikoyi Club for the professional category on Thursday while veteran golfers will have their way the following morning.
Joining the veterans in celebration of Nigeria at 52, are other invited guests from across the country.
Later on Friday evening, all the golfers will have the opportunity to sip from Heineken Lager beer at the event welcoming cocktail party.
Saturday, September 29 is the grand finale while the curtains would be drawn on the week-long event on Sunday, September 30.
Over the years, Heineken has consistently identified with the Nigeria Cup; a special event put together to mark the nation’s independent celebration.
Apart from golf that Heineken regularly sponsors, it also identifies wit h other sporting activities like the Champions League.
Restating the brands commitment to golf development, Corporate Affairs Manager of Nigeria Breweries, Edem Vindah said sponsoring the event is the company’s own way of giving that to the society that has been very supportive.
 “Heineken is a premium beer; golf is a premium sport, so naturally there is a link. And because we are a socially responsible organisation, we desire to contribute to the development of the area where we operate and sponsoring this tournament therefore is one way of doing that.
Heineken, Vindah explained further, is present in 170-countries of the world and thus, it naturally associates with an international sport like golf.
