Super Falcons avoids Equatorial Guinea

Tops Group B at AWC

Stella Mbachu scored Super Falcons ' third goal against Cote D'Ivoire on Sunday
Nigeria’s Super Falcons has managed to avoid hosts Equatorial Guinea in the semifinals of the 2012 Africa Women Championship (AWC) after it topped Group B on Sunday following a 3-1 bashing of its counterparts from Cote D’Ivoire.
The Coach Kadiri Ikhana-led squad opened scoring in the 10th minute through Ogonna Chukwudi while Ngozi Ebere increased the tally for the Nigerian side through a spectacular free kick later on to end the match on a 2-0 margin at half time.
In the second half, veteran player Stella Mbachu further increased the tally for the Nigerian ladies in the 75th minute. But the Ivorians pulled one back seven minutes later through N'rehy Tia Viho Ines to end the match on 3-1.
Nigeria therefore tops Group B after the preliminary round with 9 points from three wins over Cameroun, Ethiopia and Cote D’Ivoire.
The Nigerian ladies thus managed to avoid its arch nemesis Equatorial Guinea that knocked it out of the championship in 2008. Equatorial Guinea that inflicted a 5-0 defeat on Senegal will now face Cameroun that finished second in Group B after qualifying with maximum 9 points to top Group A.
Nigerian ladies will now face the Banyana Banyana of South Africa in the semifinals at 5.30pm on Wednesday. The South Africans qualified in the second place from Group A after beating DR Congo 4-1 on Saturday.
