National U17 team, Golden Eaglets on Sunday moved
closer to picking the 2013 African Youth Championship (AYC) ticket after it
defeated the Junior Eagles of Mali 2-0 in the first leg of the qualifying match
for the tournament held at the U.J. Esuene Stadium in Calabar.
The Eaglets picked a goal each in both halves to
become victorious. Wilfred Ndidi opened scoring for the Nigerian side in the 25th
minute. The first half ended on this note. But in the second half, Al Hassan
Ibrahim increased the tally in the 80th minute.
The Coach Manu Garba-led squad however failed to deliver
the basketful of goals that it promised Nigerians. The team missed lots of
scoring opportunities to settle for the modest goal margin.
The boys now have a tough task ahead of them going
into the second leg that is slated for Bamako, Mali capital in December.
Meanwhile, there are unconfirmed reports that the
Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has filed a potest with FIFA over the true
ages of the Malian players. NFF believes that some of the players may be
over-aged based on their massive sizes.
