Falcons falls 0-1 to Cameroun at AWC

Nigeria’s Super Falcons on Sunday lost 0-1 to Indomitable Lionesses of Cameroun in the third place match of the African Women Championship (AWC) to record its worst performance at the tourney.
The Camerounians scored the lone goal in the first half of the encounter through Gaelle Enganamouit to send the Falcons home without a medal at the championship for the first time in about two decades and inflict on the Nigerian side its second defeat in the tournament that began on October 28.
As defending champions, Falcons began its campaign for retention of the coveted African female football title it won in South Africa in 2010 with the first group match against the Camerounians that it defeated 2-1 on a soggy pitch.
The team went on to defeat Ethiopia 3-0 and Cote d’Ivoire 3-1 to make it to the semifinal where it was handed its first defeat of the tournament by a better coordinated and more determined Banyana Banyana of South Africa side in Bata.
Already, Nigerians have rated the squad tutored by Coach Kadiri Ikhana the worst in the country’s history since 1991 that it has been playing in the AWC.
Before this episode, the team’s worst outing was at the 2008 edition of the championship that was also hosted by Equatorial Guinea. The Falcons finished third that year.
