Glo Golf Tour: Nigeria’s Oyebanji, Willy lead in Sagamu

At the begin of play today, Nigerian golfer, Gboyega Oyebanji from IBB Golf & Country Club, Abuja has overtaken Gift Willy of Air Assembly, Port Harcourt, to lead in the Sagamu edition in the on-going Glo Golf Tour West Africa. Trailing the two is John Mawuli of Ghana.  

Oyebanji led with 209 points which is 4 under of the 213 course par after 3 days of keen competition, having played 71 , 69, 69 respectively. Willie, who topped the table on Thursday has a score of 210, having played 71, 68, 71 in the three days.

Third placed Mawuli scored 212 points broken down into 70, 73, 69 over the past 3 days. A total of 39 professional golfers have been cut from the field, leaving 44 golfers to fight for the prize money of N10m in the Sagamu leg of the tour and a Toyota Corolla for a-hole-in-one. Ghanaian Vincent Torgah who won the first leg in Asaba is fourth on the Leaders’ Board with a 72,70,70 play.

He told journalists that he was having a good game, saying that the tables may turn as the golfers enter the final day on Saturday. His compatriot from Ghana who came second in Asaba, Emos Korblah promised to work extra hard to excel again in Sagamu.

Korblah is currently 5th on the table. The improved performance by Nigerians confirmed the optimism earlier expressed by most Nigerian PGA members that they would improve as the game proceeded. They attributed their below expectation performance during the Asaba edition to lack of competitive golfing in the last four months in the country.

Speaking in separate interviews, the General Manager of the PGA, Mike Alika and the Secretary of the Association, Mr Jide Bolaji opined that regular competition would give professional golfers the requisite alertness and competitive edge to excel in tournaments.”
