Fear has gripped Liberian soccer fans over Lone Star’s chances of defeating the Super Eagles of Nigeria following the team’s 4-3 loss to Menas of Niger in an international friendly match in Niamey.
According to reports from Monrovia, uncertainty over the team’s ability to defeat the Eagles reached its highest on Tuesday evening after the defeat to Niger.
The development, we gathered, has had the Liberia FA officials working round the clock to assure the people of the West African country that the team has what it takes to squeeze out the much needed victory in Calabar on Saturday.
LFA boss, Musa Bility said that the team fielded against the Nigeriens was not the “full house of players” and that Tuesday’s international friendly at the General Seyni Kountche Stadium in Niamey, was a ‘preparation match’ for both countries as the Menas of Niger was playing host to Syli Nationale of Guinea at the weekend too.
Bility was quoted by local media in Monrovia as saying the result was so because players such as Saliufaspor of Turkey’s Tonia Tisdell, Sekou Jabateh Oliseh of CSKA Moscow, Edward Junior Wilson of Persipura, Cypriot club Nea Salamina based player Solomon Grimes, Eddie Boakai Forley and Semen Padang respectively were not part of the team.
He also pointed out that the absence of Liberia’s first choice goalkeeper Sherman also played a part in the defeat. Newsblitzz gathered that Lone star played the match with only 4 players on the bench (15 players in total).
A clear confirmation of late arrival reports coming from the team’s camp. But Bility indicated that the remaining foreign based players will join their colleagues on Wednesday. But as at the time of filing this report, they were yet to arrive in Ghana where they were to meet up the team that departed Niamey for Accra on Wednesday afternoon.
