Hopes of the national U17 female squad, Flamingoes returning from Azerbaijan with a trophy were dashed on Thursday when the crashed out of the ongoing FIFA Women’s U17 World Cup.
The Peter Dedevbo-tutored squad fell 3-5 to Les Bleues of France on penalties after both teams failed to score after regulation time.
The match was mainly dominated by the French while the Nigerian team did its best to prevent the Europeans from finding the net. The French ladies in turn kept the Nigerian girls in check most of the game and even prevented the squad’s 6-goal wonder, Chiwendu Ihezuo from doing any damage.
The Nigerian team’s chance of winning the match was dealt a great blow when captain of the team Victoria Aidelomon was red-card in the 74th minute after a second yellow card from a tough tackle on a French attacker.
The first penalty shootout of Azerbaijann 2012 saw Marion Romanelli strike the winning spot-kick for France as they beat Nigeria to reach the semi-finals after a 0-0 draw as the African side fell at the quarter-final stage for the second tournament running.
