FIFA President, Gianni Infantino |
World football governing body, FIFA
has increased its allocations to the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) and
other member football associations to double the former amount.
Member countries attending the
first Congress under President Gianni Infantino agreed to a new budget that
will see them receive $5.5 million (N1.09bn) every four years, more than double
what the received in the previous budget.
According to ESPN, under the new law,
the FAs will get more funds to cater to the sport in their various countries.
“Under the new financial
arrangements for 2015-18 (FIFA works on a four-year World Cup-to-World Cup
cycle), each FIFA country will receive around $5.5m (for a combined total of
$1.5 billion). That represents a significant increase over the current amount,
which is between $2.2-$2.5m over four years, or even more, depending on which
projects are approved for funding. The money is delivered through initiatives
such as the Financial Assistance Programme and Goal, which are designed to
develop football amongst FIFA nations.
“Additional funds of up to
$250,000 per year are also being made available to cover travel costs and
provide training equipment for FIFA's poorest nations,” ESPN reports.
With the increasing in money to
member countries, Infantino has fulfilled a key part of his election campaign
and subsequent victory in February.
