Super Eagles players and officials with Governor Godswill Akpabio of Akwa Ibom (carrying trophy) in Uyo on Sunday |
Akwa Ibom State Government has
splashed a whopping sum of N37.5million on the Super Eagles for winning the 2013
Africa Cup of Nations title for the third time in February.
Governor Godswill Akpabio
announced the rewards for the team paid on Sunday when it paid a visit to the
governor just hours after it escaped defeat by visiting Harambee Stars of Kenya
in Calabar on Saturday in a 2014 FIFA World Cup qualifying match.
The team was feted by the
governor before the players and officials of the winning squad got varying
amounts of money as reward.
Each of the 23 footballers got
N1million, the team’s chief coach, Stephen Keshi pocketed N2million, his four
assistant received N1million each while the remaining 17 backroom staff of the
team got N500,000 each.
Akpabio also donated a
three-bedroom apartment to Eagles’ goalkeeper, Vincent Enyeama, a citizen of
the state, for doing it and the nation proud at the championship.
“We hardly see anything to
celebrate about. That’s why when you did the miracle you did in South
Africa, you brought back the Nigerian
spirit. You gave even a three-year Nigerian child something to celebrate by
winning the cup,” Akpabio said.
He also praised the NFF for its
contributions while advising the players to be disciplined in the career.
